Our Approach to Early Learning
At Two Little Owls, we begin with a simple belief: children are capable, curious, and full of ideas. Our approach is rooted in emergent, inquiry-based learning and inspired by the Reggio Emilia tradition, while drawing from the best of early childhood education more broadly.
Relationships come first.
Young children learn best when they feel physically and emotionally safe. That is why loving, reliable care is not separate from education at TLO—it is its foundation. Our educators take time to know each child, giving them the confidence to explore more independently, express themselves, and engage with the world around them.
Children help shape the curriculum.

Our classrooms facilitate learning.
Classrooms are arranged to help children make choices, regulate emotions, access materials independently, work alone or with others, and return to ideas over time. The goal is not a room filled with things, but rather an environment that invites children to wonder, experiment, create, collaborate, and belong.
Social-emotional development is learning.
At TLO, we understand behavior as communication. Strong feelings, disagreement, frustration, excitement, separation, friendship, and conflict are all normal parts of early childhood. Teachers model respectful communication, help children name what is happening, support co-regulation, and guide children through conflict and repair.
Families are part of the learning community.
Our goal is for Two Little Owls to feel connected to the rest of a child's life, rather than like a separate world they enter each morning. We incorporate family photographs, traditions, and details from a child’s home into classroom life. Families may also participate more directly by joining school events or our Parent-Teacher Association.
Learning extends beyond the classroom.
Our children get out into East Cambridge for neighborhood walks, playground visits, and storytime at the Cambridge Public Library. Music sessions with Little Groove bring instruments, singing, rhythm, and movement into the school. Infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and Pre-K children also participate in age-appropriate yoga.
Meals are part of the school day.
For children in our Toddler, Preschool, and Pre-K programs, the school day includes morning and afternoon snacks and lunch. We prioritize healthy, balanced meals that fuel children's growth and development. Infant families provide milk or formula and age-appropriate food for their child.
We invest in our educators.
Children benefit when the adults caring for them feel supported, trusted, and able to continue learning themselves. Ongoing support includes collaboration with colleagues, observation and coaching, reflective supervision, team meetings, and professional development.
